God of War (PS4)5/25/2018 I took some time to wait before writing this review, because God of War deserves the time taken to examine it. It is a masterpiece, easily the best game of this console generation. It is a family-driven story that gives Kratos the three-dimensional portrayal that he needed. His relationship with his son, Atreus, is center-stage in this fantastic journey into Norse mythology. The visuals of this game are the best on the PS4 at this current moment. The story itself is long, deep, and rewarding, while also setting up the future of this franchise flawlessly. The multiple twists at the end of the main story are also welcome and have interesting implications for the franchise. The side quests all feel natural and rewarding in their own right. Combat in God of War is the most satisfying it's ever been. The Leviathan Axe is a brutal weapon, and you can feel the impact with every cruel stroke and throw. The RPG elements of this game are surprisingly non-intrusive, and enhance the game rather than create a tedious grind to level up. This game gets incredibly difficult on higher difficulties, however, so leveling up becomes highly important. The leveling system actually uses a gear score system rather than a traditional leveling system, but it works here because of how rewarding it is to earn your loot. No RNGing for your legendary drops here; you have to work for them.
Overall, Sony Santa Monica should be truly proud of the beautiful game they have made here. Easily my favorite game of all time. RATING: LEGENDARY, GOTY CONTENDER
